MASS ARMS ADAMS PATENT NAVY REVOLVER Cal 36
Cal. 36. S# 341. Standard configuration of the popular revolver often seen in photographs of early war Virginia Cavalry Confederate soldiers with 6" octagon bbl. Blue finish. Checkered 2 piece walnut grips w/ round lanyard slot. Top strap is marked in 3 lines, “Manufactured by Mass Arms Chicopee Falls”. Left of frame marked, “Adams patent May 3, 1858” on left side and “Patent June 3, 1856” on right side. Loading lever is marked, “Kerr’s patent/April 14, 1857”. S# is stamped on the forward left side of the frame and on cyl. The soldier who carried this gun nicely carved his initials on the left side of top grip strap “RL / A”. The state of Virginia purchased 1,000 of these in 1860, this is probably one of them. CONDITION: good to very good. Traces of original blue finish in protected areas, balance gray. Markings are all crisp and discernible. Mechanically functional with good discernible rifling in pitted bore. PROVENANCE: Collection of Lewis Leigh Jr.
